What is wild camping?
Did you know that you can go wild camping in Scotland? Wild camping is setting up camp outside of a campsite or caravan park and pitching your tent in the wilderness. It's a great way to explore Scotland off the beaten track and discover some remote parts of the country.
How to be responsible whilst wild camping:
- Don’t forget to respect the environment by leaving no trace and taking away all your litter and belongings to ensure others can also enjoy the camping spot.
- Even if you are somewhere remote, there may be a community nearby so it’s important to be considerate of people who call that place home.
- Ask nearby residents if you wish to camp near houses.
- Use public toilets where available. Take care with toilet hygiene.
- Avoid overcrowding and move to another spot if it’s too busy. Keep groups small.
- Use a camping stove rather than lighting a fire. Never light open fires or BBQs during a dry period or near forests, farmland or buildings and never cut down or damage trees.
- Don’t camp in enclosed fields of crops or farm animals and keep away from buildings and roads.
- Wild camping rules don’t apply to motorised vehicles.
Wild camping is permitted in Scotland, as long as you stick to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
